Meningitis Correct
Asthma Correct
Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) Incorrect answer selected
Septicaemic shock Correct
Explanation
Steroids decrease the incidence of deafness following Haemophilus influenzae type B (HIB) meningitis.
They are used as a first line treatment in asthma.
There is currently insufficient evidence to advocate the routine use of steroids in patients with ARDS as potential short-term improvements appear to be mitigated by later adverse effects. If steroids are used, however, abrupt cessation should be avoided.
Steroids are useful in septicaemic shock that is unresponsive to increasing inotropic support. Steroids are thought to improve vascular reactivity. They are thought to improve hemodynamic stability, thereby allowing earlier withdrawal of vasopressors and decreasing the duration of shock. But they do not reduce mortality and further immunocompromise the patient.
