Is it true that hyponatraemia is associated with the following?

True / False

Pain Correct

Diuretic therapy Correct

Prolonged exercise Correct

Cushing's syndrome Incorrect answer selected

Nephrotic syndrome Correct

Explanation

Hyponatraemia frequently results from an excess of body water (for example, congestive cardiac failure, liver cirrhosis, nephrotic syndrome, etc). Cushing's Syndrome results from hypersecretion of cortisol. Cortisol is a glucocorticoid with mineralocorticoid properties. Glucocorticoids can cause sodium and potassium retention. A deficit of mineralocorticoids will lead to a failure of sodium reabsorption and hyponatraemia.

Pain is associated with the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (SIADH).

Prolonged exercise is associated with hyponatraemia. Athletes are now advised to replace water and electrolytes during prolonged endurance events (i.e. overhydrate)

Diuretics are one of the leading causes of hyponatraemia.
