The use of mannitol is associated with a reduction in the incidence of acute renal failure in patients with:
True / False
Rhabdomyolysis Correct
Hepatorenal syndrome Correct
Sepsis Correct
Aortic aneurysm repair Correct
Renal transplantation Incorrect answer selected
Explanation
Mannitol has the potential to protect vulnerable kidneys.
As a freely filtered molecule it remains within the renal tubules and prompts an osmotic dieresis that may 'flush' out toxic waste products. Mannitol, through a number of mechanisms, also increases renal blood flow and acts as a free radical scavenger.
However evidence to support the use of mannitol is limited. Importance should be placed instead upon adequate hydration and other supportive measures.
