Intravenous paracetamol:
True / False
Should be limited to a daily infusion maximum of 3 g in chronically malnourished patients Correct
Is formulated in a 50 ml vial for patients weighing less than 33 kg Incorrect answer selected
Is safer in accidental overdose than oral paracetamol Correct
Is formulated in the UK in a concentration of 1 mg/ml Correct
Should be administered over 15 minutes or longer Correct
Explanation
Intravenous paracetamol should be given by infusion over at least 15 minutes and the maximum adult daily dose of 4 g should be reduced in patients with chronic alcoholism, hepatocellular insufficiency and malnutrition.
It is formulated in a concentration of 10 mg/ml and smaller vials of 50 ml are recommended for patients <33 kg to reduce the risk of accidental overdose.
Intravenous paracetamol is potentially very toxic in overdose as standard oral treatment nomograms cannot be accurately applied.
The correct dose in infants <10 kg is 7.5 mg/kg with a maximum daily dose of 25 mg/kg. In children >10 kg and <33 kg, the IV dose is 15 mg/kg with a maximum daily dose of 60 mg/kg.
